Perinatal Counsellor/Social Worker
Katie is an Accredited Social Worker with the Australian Association of Social Workers with almost 15 years of experience mainly working in the public hospital system and more recently in perinatal mental health. She provides 'non-directive pregnancy support counselling' during pregnancy and the postnatal period. Women who are either pregnant or have been pregnant in the preceding 12 months can claim a Medicare rebate for up to three sessions with a GP referral. Katie also provides counselling to those not eligible for the Medicare rebate, in which case the full fee will be charged.
Katie is a Certified Provider of Neuroprotective Developmental Care (NDC – also known as the Possums Programs – an evidence-based approach to the care of parents and babies). She provides support and advice around a range of issues utilising this approach including breastfeeding, infant sleep, cry/fuss problems and maternal mental health. She is working towards a Master of Palliative Care and has a special interest in supporting parents who have experienced perinatal loss. She also provides support with birth preparation, birth debriefing, the adjustment to parenthood, transitioning from one to two (or more) children, parenting challenges relating to toddler/preschooler behaviour, relationship difficulties and more.
Katie is passionate about ensuring new parents receive the support they need in the weeks and months after their baby is born. She recommends all couples make a postpartum plan during pregnancy which is something she can also help facilitate during counselling sessions.
